New Mexico: IED Discovered in Residence, 1 Arrested

On 2 April 2024, at approximately 2130 hours local time, Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered a suspicious device while searching a home south of Roswell. Deputies called the New Mexico State Bomb Squad to assist with the device, which they determined was an IED described as a large propane tank with electrical wires protruding from it. The homeowner told authorities that he also had a hand grenade inside his home. The individual was arrested, and authorities continued searching the home. No further information was released.

Nevada: Pyrotechnic Functioned Inside Mormon Church, 4 Injured

n 27 March 2024, the Henderson Police Department and Fire Department received reports that a pyrotechnic functioned at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house in Henderson at the 800 block of Arrowhead Trail. The unidentified suspect entered the meeting house and threw a pyrotechnic on the floor where a youth activity was being held. Four people sustained minor injuries. The Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Michigan: IED Found at Truck Stop, 1 Arrested

On 28 March 2024, Monroe Public Safety Department authorities arrested a wanted fugitive at a gas station in Monroe. Authorities searched the suspect’s vehicle and discovered a suspicious device. Michigan State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and determined that the device was an IED. The area was evacuated, and technicians removed the device from the scene. The investigation is ongoing and charges against the suspect are pending.

Louisiana: BMM and IIDs Discovered in Home During Drug Raid, 1 Arrested

n 29 March 2024, detectives from St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office (STPSO) Narcotics Division and Proactive Enforcement Unit discovered improvised incendiary devices (IIDs) and bomb-making materials (BMM) while searching a Mandeville residence on the 2500 block of Rue Weller. The STPSO Hazardous Device Unit was called to the scene to assist with handling the found materials, which included five complete IIDs, one nearly complete IID, and a large assortment of BMM used to construct IIDs. No details about the BMM were released.

California: Pyrotechnics Functioned in School Bathroom, 2 Arrested

On 3 April 2024, at approximately 1137 hours local time, the Petaluma Police Department (PPD) began receiving reports of an explosion at Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma. PPD officers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the school was evacuated. With assistance from a PPD bomb-sniffing dog, police determined that a pyrotechnic device, described as a commercial “quarter-stick” style pyrotechnic, had been functioned inside a boys’ bathroom. No injuries were reported. PPD officers identified two juvenile male students as the alleged perpetrators.

California: BMM Discovered at Elementary School, 3 Detained

On 30 March 2024, at approximately 0046 hours local time, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers responded to an alarm at Torrey Pines Elementary School in La Jolla, where they heard and then saw three juveniles fleeing from the school’s gymnasium. SDPD officers located the three suspects and detained them. Law enforcement searched the school grounds and discovered bomb-making material (BMM) that could be used to make nine improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, and three of the nine IIDs were full of gasoline.

California: TATP Found While Searching Drug Lab, 1 Arrested

On 26 March 2024, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and a team from the county’s hazardous materials program found an explosive compound in three containers while processing the scene at a dimethyltryptamine (DMT) lab at a residence on the 800 block of Shasta Daisy Drive in Brentwood. The Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad responded to assist and identified the substance as triacetone triperoxide (TATP).

Russia: ISIS K Throws Incendiary Devices in Mass Shooting at Concert Hall, 4 Arrested, 80 Injured, 143 Dead

On 22 March 2024, several armed suspects stormed Crocus City Hall, a large music venue in Moscow, and threw incendiary devices at concertgoers and opened fire, subsequently triggering a massive fire within the venue. At least 143 individuals were killed and over 80 were injured. The Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS K) claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of this claim. The incident is the deadliest attack in Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege. Four suspects were arrested for terrorism charges, and the investigation is ongoing.

Canada: IEDs and EPCs Found in Home, 1 Arrested

On 27 March 2024, at approximately 1337 hours local time, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Explosive Disposal Unit technicians conducted a controlled detonation after discovering unspecified IEDs and explosive precursor chemicals (EPCs) at a residence in Port Alberni, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. The search followed the discovery of guns and ammunition at the residence on 25 March. A 48-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, with more charges expected.

Michigan: Homemade Pyrotechnics Function in Home, 2 Injured

On 24 March 2024, at approximately 2200 hours local time, residents heard an explosion at a Wyandotte residence on Cora Street between Antoine and Baumey Streets. Wyandotte police officers and fire crews responded to assist, and investigators determined that the explosion was caused by a resident manufacturing homemade pyrotechnics. The home sustained severe interior damage and two people were seriously injured. The ATF is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
