Iowa: Suspected Pipe Bomb Discovered in Vehicle
On 29 August 2024, at approximately 0845 hours local time, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Johnston-Grimes Fire Department crews responded to an auto auction business on SE Gateway Drive in Grimes following a report of a suspicious object. An employee discovered what authorities identified as a “crudely made” suspected pipe bomb inside a vehicle. The device was composed of a plastic pipe with a fuse on one end. The area was evacuated, and the Des Moines Bomb Squad was called to assist. Bomb squad technicians removed the device from the scene for further investigation.
