Virginia: Search warrant in tire deflation crime leads to IED discovery; safely removed, one arrested

Collinsville: On 2 February 2026, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) was serving a search warrant on a 64-year-old male suspect’s home on Murphy Road, when they discovered an improvised explosive device (IED). The suspect was being investigated for intentional tire deflation caused by the deliberate deployment of a spiked tire deflation device in his neighborhood. During the search, HCSO recovered evidence of the tire deflation device as well as a crudely constructed IED, remnants of additional detonated IEDs, and ammunition.

Texas: Border patrol agent brings flash-bang grenade to international airport, one arrested

McAllen: On 1 February 2026, around 1227 local time, police officers responded to a call for a “live explosive device” at McAllen-Miller International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration discovered the device while screening luggage and contacted the police department. Officers determined the device was a flash-bang grenade and belonged to a Border Patrol Agent, a 42-year-old male suspect. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of weapon-places prohibited, a third-degree felony and transported to jail.

New Mexico: Explosive device discovered among donated items at donation

Las Cruces: On 3 February 2026, at approximately 1200 local time, Las Cruces Police Department and the Doña Ana County Bomb Squad responded to a Savers Donation Center located at 2340 North Main Street. A suspected explosive device was discovered among donated items. The store was evacuated, and nearby businesses were instructed to shelter in place until the device was safely removed. The suspected explosive device was removed from the store by the Doña Ana County Bomb Squad. No injuries were reported.

Massachusetts: Employee leaves hoax bomb at Bridgewater State University dining hall, one arrested

Bridgewater: On 3 February 2026, at approximately 1600 local time, Bridgewater State University Police were dispatched to a dining hall after a manager discovered a suspicious package inside their office. The package, described as a medium-sized silver metal case, contained a sticky note that read “BOMB DO NOT OPEN.” A separate note attached to the case read, “J/K student left gaming case.” Out of an abundance of caution, university police evacuated students and staff from the dining hall and requested assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.

Kansas: Search warrant leads to discovery and removal of improvised explosive device, one arrested

Goodland: On 4 February 2026, Goodland Police arrested an unidentified suspect after serving a search warrant at a home on West 11th Street. The suspect was found to be in possession of an improvised explosive device (IED) and illegal drugs. The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office assisted in establishing a cordon while Kansas Highway Patrol Hazardous Devices Unit responded to the scene and safely removed the IED. Goodland Police reported the suspect is facing multiple felony charges.

Washington: Dangerous donation at church is identified as an improvised explosive device, safely removed

Mount Vernon: On 29 January 2026, at approximately 1715 local time, the Mount Vernon Police and the Bellingham Police Hazardous Device Unit (HDU) responded to a local church on East Evergreen Street, after the discovery of a "tennis ball bomb." The HDU confirmed the device as an improvised explosive device (IED) and safely disposed of it. The Mount Vernon Police are continuing the investigation into the device.

Maine: Criminal use of explosives in a snowbank, one arrested

Sumner: On 12 January 2026, explosives were detonated in a snowbank on Decoster Road in front of a home. On 2 February 2026, investigators obtained a search warrant for a 50-year-old male suspect’s home on Allen School Road, where they discovered several items capable of being used to manufacture explosives. The State Fire Marshal’s Office arrested the suspect and charged him with two counts of criminal use of explosives in connection with the explosion on 12 January.

Montana: Device discovered prompts security sweeps of three nearby schools, device removed

Helena: On 29 January 2026, at approximately 1000 local time, Helena Police responded to a health club on North Montana Avenue following the discovery of a suspicious device described as a jug of gasoline with fireworks. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the FBI assisted to assess and mitigate the device. The device was in an area where a planned protest by Helena High students was to be held; due to security concerns the protest was cancelled.

Texas: Pipe bomb found at local residence; device removed, one arrested, one wanted

Jacksonville: On 28 January 2026, Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a search warrant at residence where they were attempting to serve an arrest warrant, and located methamphetamine, firearms, marijuana, and a suspected pipe bomb inside the residence. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded and safely removed the suspected explosive device. Officials stated that the 42-year-old suspect, who was the subject of the arrest warrant, was not present at the residence at the time of the search.

California: Initial findings at apartment explosion found fireworks and bomb-making materials, two deceased, one injured

Bell Gardens: On 27 January 2026, at approximately 1900 local time, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Bureau – Arson and Explosives Detail and Los Angeles County Firefighters, responded to an apartment complex on Purdy Avenue following an explosion that killed two, injured one, and extensively damaged the building. Police reported they identified materials consistent with homemade explosives and fireworks, including energetic powder, and believe the explosion was caused during the construction of a homemade explosive or fireworks.
