Marine Flare Washes Up on Beach; Removed Safely
Fripp Island: On 21 May 2026, a U.S. Marine Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to a request for assistance from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office after a marine flare washed ashore at Fripp Island, SC. The flare was identified as an 18‑by‑3‑inch Mk 25 Mod 4 Marine Marker nominally filled with red phosphorus; however, this particular marker had already been expended. The EOD team recovered the spent flare and added it to their ordnance library for training purposes.
