Idaho: Demolition crew find safe filled with blasting caps

Coeur d’Alene: On 29 January 2026, at approximately 1215 hours local, Coeur d’Alene Police Department responded to a property in the 1000 block of East Lakeside Avenue following the discovery of six pounds of electronic blasting caps inside a safe. The items were transported to the police department for disposal. Police alerted local businesses and closed the street in front of the police department. Ramsey Elementary School entered a safety hold as a precautionary measure.

Oklahoma: Two artillery shells discovered in rural Wilburton, rendered safe by controlled detonation

Wilburton: On 19 January 2026, Latimer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of two potentially explosive artillery shells that a local resident possessed. Oklahoma Highway Patrol bomb squad and members of a US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Fort Sill also responded to assess the danger posed by these military-grade ordnance items. An assessment determined the shells were too aged to move safely, so they were rendered safe in a controlled detonation. The larger of the two artillery shells was determined to be a live round.

Lexington: On 22 January 2026, Lexington Police discovered explosive materials at a residence on Tates Creek Road during a follow-up to an investigation. The Lexington Police Hazardous Devices Unit responded promptly and secured the material.

California: Explosive chemical found in Berkeley home forces evacuations

Berkeley: On 26 January 2026, the discovery of approximately two liters of decades-old picric acid, previously used in an old photography lab at a home on Colusa Avenue, prompted Berkeley officials to evacuate the home and adjacent houses and issue a shelter-in-place order for the neighborhood. According to Berkeley police, picric acid is highly volatile and is no longer commonly used. Fire and police officials stated the amount of picric acid found had the explosive potential of a pipe bomb if activated.

Pennsylvania: Explosive devices and materials discovered in home after terroristic threats, one arrested

Bethlehem: On 15 January 2026, Bethlehem Township police obtained a search warrant for the home of a male suspect estimated to be in his late sixties to early seventies who had been arrested two days prior on assault and other charges and discovered firearms along with multiple explosive devices and materials. The Bethlehem Township Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were dispatched to the scene. The explosive items were safely removed by bomb squad members.

Pennsylvania: Police discovered three improvised explosive devices in a vacant apartment, removed by bomb squad

Altoona: On 20 January 2026, the Altoona Police and Fire Department responded to an apartment complex on 13th Avenue, following a report of suspicious items found. Upon arrival, Altoona Police contacted Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Squad after discovering three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a vacant apartment. The bomb squad safely removed the devices, and there was no threat to other complex occupants. The investigation is ongoing.

Illinois: Authorities discover explosive device, drugs, and weapons in vehicle, three arrested

Amboy: On 16 January 2026, a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office spotted a broken-down vehicle with a Georgia license plate near Route 30 and Inlet Road and stopped to render assistance. The deputy spoke with the three men inside the vehicle and identified items used for ingesting narcotics. All three men were arrested and a deeper search of the vehicle revealed drugs, weapons, and evidence that pointed to an explosive device inside the car. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called in to assist in securing the explosive device.

Illinois: Unknown burglars use suspected explosive devices to gain access to restaurant safe

Oak Park: On 12 January 2026, in the early morning hours, two unknown male suspects forced entry into a restaurant on North Marion Street and used tools, along with an unknown explosive device, to gain access to the restaurant safe. The incident remains under investigation by the Oak Park Police.

Washington: Cleaning crew finds improvised explosive device in home

Burien: On 14 January 2026, the Burien Police Department responded to a call from a home located on Southwest 149th Street and 22nd Avenue Southwest, where a cleaning crew discovered an improvised explosive device in the garage. Police blocked the street to pedestrian traffic during the disposal operation for safety reasons. The King County Bomb Disposal Unit rendered the device safe.

Texas: Explosive devices safely removed in Dime Box

Dime Box: On 14 January 2026, the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding suspected explosive devices near the intersection of Bowers Street and County Road 425. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office worked with officers from Lee County Constable Precinct 4 to secure the area and safely handle the devices. Police advised residents and the public to avoid the intersection.
