Maryland: Explosive device detonated inside mailbox causing damage to box and post, no suspects

Galena: On 4 January 2026, at approximately 2130 local time, the Kent County Sheriff's Office responded to the 13700-block of Gregg Neck Road, following a reported detonation of an explosive device inside a mailbox. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office reported the explosive device was placed inside the mailbox and intentionally detonated, damaging the box and the post. No suspects were identified, and the incident remains under investigation.

Kentucky: M60 fuse igniter discovered during service of judicial process, one arrested

Mammoth Cave: On 12 January 2026, at approximately 2130 local time, the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the Cave Hollow Bay community to serve a warrant. During the operation, the deputies conducted a consensual search of the residence and identified a backpack belonging to a 46-year-old female suspect. Inside the backpack, deputies found methamphetamines and an M60 explosive igniter, which is a device used to ignite military fuses in various weather conditions.

Kansas: Man, critically injured after picking up explosive object

Wichita: On 2 January 2026 about 1414 local time, a 37-year-old man suffered severe injuries after an unknown object, believed to be an older firework, exploded in his hand in the 2400 block of George Washington Boulevard. According to the investigation, the man found the explosive near the 1700 block of South Hillside and lit it, intending to throw it into water when it exploded. Police said the man is in critical, but stable condition at a Wichita hospital.

Kansas: Man, critically injured after picking up explosive object

Wichita: On 2 January 2026, at approximately 1245 local time, Wichita Police Department (WPD) responded to a report of a person shot in the 1100 block of South Emporia. They located a victim, who reported he picked up an object, which detonated when he walked away with it. The man's hand was severely injured, and officers applied a tourniquet. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition on the evening of 2 January.

Florida: Bomb-making material discovered by ex-girlfriend, one arrested

Venice: On 6 January 2026, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in the 4000 block of Manfield Drive by a homeowner who informed officers she had moved “large, suspicious coolers filled with various chemicals and fireworks,” belonging to her 73-year-old ex-boyfriend onto her driveway.

Texas: Improvised explosive devices and hand grenades discovered in attic of new homeowners

Houston: On 10 January 2026, the Harris County Sheriff responded to a home in the 7400 block of John Ralston Road after new residents discovered objects that they believed could be dangerous. Deputies located what they believed to be hand grenades along with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene. Bomb technicians examined the devices and determined that they were live. The explosives were safely removed from the property without incident. No injuries were reported.

Minnesota: Fireworks used on law enforcement during protests

Minneapolis: On 12 January 2026, protesters gathered outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building and were reported to have set off fireworks. One protestor reportedly threw a firework over a fence while fleeing and it exploded shortly afterward.  Other protestors were seen launching fireworks toward agents. It was not clear if those arrested were also involved in the use of the pyrotechnics.

Delaware: Explosive device discovered during parole check and drug enforcement operation, three arrested

Georgetown: On 7 January 2026, at approximately 1420 local time, the Delaware State Police (DSP) and members of the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force were called to a 34-year-old female suspect’s home on McColleys Chapel Road during a parole probation check. At the residence, they detained the female suspect and two male suspects pursuant to a drug enforcement operation. During the search of the home, DSP identified an explosive device and contacted the Delaware State Police Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit, who inspected the device and confirmed it to be active.

Colorado: Police investigate pipe bomb left at fire station

Pueblo: On 13 January 2026, at approximately 1200 local time, the Pueblo Police Department responded to Fire Station 1, located at 425 West 7th Street, after a pipe bomb was discovered. According to authorities, a man found “what appeared to be a pipe bomb” in an alley near the fire station. He picked up the suspicious item and brought it to the station’s entrance, prompting the fire department to contact the police. A bomb technician with the Pueblo Police Department confirmed that the item was indeed a pipe bomb.

Wisconsin: Bomb-making materials found at suspect's work, one arrested

West Allis: On 5 January 2026, a 48-year-old male suspect was arrested following an investigation by West Allis Police. The investigation started on 30 December 2025 after police received a tip claiming the suspect was constructing pipe bombs while working at a landscaping business in West Allis. The suspect had previously assembled and detonated an explosive device and had provided the tipster with an explosive device. During a search of the business, authorities found all necessary components, materials and tools needed to construct multiple improvised explosive devices.
